As a Beijingren Laowai - top tip for taxis is speak like a pirate and they eventually get what you mean....

That or just stick to Sanlitwaaaaah where you can walk everywhere

Q Bar too at the risk of it being too crowded for me to drink at is the best roof terrace - on top of the obscure Eastern Hotel at the bottom of Nan Sanlitun lu and Gongti Nan Lu cross.

Best cocktails and best roof terrace = quite a combo

I think it was that time I went to see Arsenal play at home at Highbury which is in north London, oh hang on, tell a lie, the away game against Tottenham was slightly further north of Highbury. I've also been to High Wycombe which may possibly be even further north.

I think there's a market for it here- Quan Ju De packs them in on Huaihai Lu and it's rubbish.

That new Xin Da Lu in the Hyatt does a good duck, but surely there's room for two good duck places in a city this size!

James - After 40 years I still haven't visited Scotland, so don't be too harsh on yourself. You're way ahead of me. I also know a few Beijingers who have not seen the Great Wall. One of my colleagues in Beijing is closely connected with Da Dong's owner - she calls him uncle da dong. Let's see if my guanxi can get a branch opened in Shanghai, ideally somewhere within walking distance of your apartment.
