And on that bombshell
I’m leaving Shanghai, and leaving China.
Me and Emma are going to live in Manchester, we leave on December 7th*.
It’s been a great three years, and just feels like the right time to leave for me.
*So that means you’ve got 3 more Shoe Tuesdays

Another phantom reader… have been following your quips since Doves’ board. Hope you surface somewhere online again. Good luck on the journey home.
damn… gonna miss your posts!
I’ve been reading since Lost Seouls and have many pleasurable moments trying to control my laughter while at work.
Funnily enough I started read Lost Seouls when I was in Shanghai then to my suprise found Ispyshanghai when I was living in Seoul last year. In beijing now and probably wont go back to the UK any time soon.
Good luck and hope you keep writing!
Wow, I didnt imagine this moment would come. I have been enjoying your blog ever since I came to Shanghai. This was the first China blog I read, and I used it as a model for the old version of mine. I even spotted you on 3 different occasions in Shanghai, and was too shy/lazy to say hello. Damn, now its too late.
Good luck in England!
just like michael jackson , ispy says THIS IS IT
Surely you could spin a coffee table book from some of your posts/pictures?
As you know, we’re also leaving China this year. I’m finding it hard to find the motivation to write about being a fanta pants in Singapore though.
James, I’ll certainly miss your blog… I hope you don’t forget about Shanghai though. Go back to and see the world fair next year (I will be there) and when they finish building the world’s largest disneyland. Before you go, maybe you should go to the site where they’ll build it and come back in 10 years for some before and after shots.
And 1 last thing to do before you leave, go see Chongming Island where they just finished building the new tunnel/bridge to. Definitely a part of Shanghai you don’t see elsewhere and quickly fading away too. (they’re building some crazy sustainable eco-city there)
Good luck with everything back in England.
Wo, Wo, Wo, sweet child of mine. What’s this? You’re coming back you say. Do we get a say in the matter? What if we dont want you back? Thats just not cricket James and deep down, you know it.
Why Manchester (again) anyway? You cant go and stand around drinking in the same student pubs as you did after graduating, you’re 43 for god’s sake. You’ll be locked up and I for one will say I told you so.
(Great blog, sad for it to be over but go on, start the Manc one – “Northern quippage” or “Tales of Sale” or “Hucknall Hype” come to mind).
I’ll get the pints ready.
I for one am ecstatic (like, if I was a girl I’d be wet), that you are leaving, procrastinating would be so much easier to control.
I haven’t been this devastated since Alan Partridge didn’t get a second series.
