Shoe Choo-Choosday
The overnight train from Shanghai to Beijing is always pretty plush, but with the new D trains it’s almost like a little capsule hotel.
In the soft sleeper class (about 680-720RMB one way) you get your own TV with headphones, a reading light, enough space to comfortably lie flat, and….
Since you’ve got four people all sharing maybe 2 square metres of floor space in the carriage, it’s actually pretty useful to know which one is your colour. Also it’s fun to have a fist-fight to the death over the blue ones.
If you liked that, you might like...

That slippers photo reminds me of the Google logo.
I would have gone for the green.
What was on TV?
Colin- The Da Vinci Code. Dubbed into Chinese, with all references to religion cut out.
“The Da Vinci Code. Dubbed into Chinese, with all references to religion cut out.”…. and as such far more interesting and easier to follow than the original…
yes Chris- as far as I’m aware, the story involves Tom Hanks running around and looking at old maps, much like Wincey Willis did in Treasure Hunt.
We got “The Pursuit of Happyness” and another one I can’t remember the name. Also dubbed into Chinese :(
ana- how close was I to bumping into you in Tiananmen square? Did you take a train the same day as me?
Food on the new D-trains is nothing like as good as the T trains. It’s all just heated up in a microwave now. Progress i suppose.
they should pre-assign a particular colour of slippers to a particular bunk to avoid arguments
I doubt that my size-13 feet would fit the slippers, so I would just have to expose my socks and risk causing a biological WMD alert. Or do they have special goliath whitey slippers in reserve?
Dingle- but what if a very important official wanted the yellow ones? You have to think these things through
David- no you’d be screwed I’m afraid. They barely fit onto my dainty size 9s. Best to keep a backup pair in your manbag.
