In “The Economist” they cut straight to the chase and use the terms “rich countries” and “poor countries”.

At least that’s what Emma tells me, I can’t read that magazine personally- duller than All Bran.

China has never been “third world,” – the construct of first and second and third worlds is a Cold War phenomenon, now mostly discarded, however, First World Nations were NATO alligned nations, with modern infrastructure and somewhat democratic governments. Second World Nations were those aligned with the Soviet Bloc, and while there was massive fall-out between those in Moscow and those in Beijing, for the purposes of arbitrary naming techniques, China was still very much Second World. Third World were those nations which were unaligned.

If you are referring to the current status of China as a developing world economy, the Third World nation moniker is still inaccurate – developmental studies majors nowadays prefer the terms developed, developing and underdeveloped, and China, most obviously belongs in the developing column.
