Shanghai brands
A recap on “Made in Shanghai” stuff I have bought:
Crap, I don’t use it any more.

Which I do like and still use occasionally.
Top thrift fashion. If only it would stop raining
- and now, a Shanghai watch
Apparently in the 60s and 70s in Shanghai, no girl would marry you unless you had one of these watches (as worn by Zho En Lai, Deng Xiao Ping and some guy called Mao).
And let me tell you fellas, the magic has not worn off.
Since I’ve started parading my wrist around town wearing this bad boy, I have had no fewer than 8 proposals of marriage. That’s more than double my weekly average!
Shanghai Brand Watch- 220RMB
From a small covered stall on the corner of JiaoZhou Lu, near WuDing Lu

I’ve got some Shanghai pants which are great as long as I’m not too close to any naked flames.
what a great time piece…and i never knew i could purchase one within pissing distance from my flat.
does it come in faux gold?
James — that comment you left,…
I read it in the Teacher’s Room at work and BARKED out a laugh that frightened the other teachers. Then I read it again and laughed so hard I just about started to cry. Thank you!!
Mum- if you follow the link to Jenn’s site and read the comment that I left there, electric sparks will fly out of the computer and break Dad’s printer.
Balticninja- they have genuine yellow metal if that’s any good to you?
Zicca- they sound great, how often do you really need to stand next to a naked flame anyway?

you might like it…
yellow metal IS gold. silly.
Yeah I saw that, but I had a look at some Smena photos on flickr.
Not that impressed really.
Dingle is more the type to buy shoddy Russian cameras. He’ll be along shortly I suspect.
He’s not coming is he?
I never found a Shanghai watch I liked, I’ll stick to my Tianjin Seagull thankyou very much!
Yeah, russian rangefinders maybe, none of this Smena nonsense though, it’s just a fancy necklace that
Sorry to burst your bubble but I think you’ll find Mao exclusively wore a Mao watch, hence why he gets called Mao.
That’s nothing – my Shanghai watch has 18 jewels!
dingle: ‘none of this Smena nonsense though’ swiss: ‘Not that impressed really.’
if thats your chat you might as well go digital and be done with. its 2009 chaps.
For the same price as a smena you could get something half decent! Seagull TLR, yashica 35g etc etc
Digital’s good for taking pics for the blog, it’s got it’s uses
ChrisB- I can definitely imagine Mao wearing one of his own wavey hand watches. It’d be a lot like this

Colin- curses. This is worse than those Gilette with their 18 blade razors.
baltic- Dingle’s right though, you could get a couple of Ukuleles for that kind of money, I’m strongly against Lomos and paying way over the odds for what are essentially crap cameras.
Crap cheap cameras are OK- me and Dingle have both had a lot of fun with a Vivitar Wide and Slim- am I right or am I wrong Dingle?
Eeeeh the wide and slim, i’d forgotten about that, have you still got it?
20rmb balticninja, 20RMB!!! (how do you do numbers in capital letters)
No I gave you it back innit.
wide AND slim, did you buy that at the SexPo Dingle?
i live as an expat in shanghai. it would be good if i did not have to order online, but i have checked in many places that sell electronics and i have only seen philips and vidal sassoon hair irons, neither of which are very good. does anyone know of any stores or hairdressers in Shanghai that sell genuine flat irons???
