Shoe Tuesday / FeiYuesday
Way back in the midsts or 2008 I bought a pair of shoes from a street vendor outside the fabric market.
They looked good and were kind of, almost my size if I didn’t wear laces and curled up my toes a bit. For 20RMB I wasn’t too fussy.
Now I realise that what I’d bought was a fake pair of a great and glorious part of Shanghai’s past: Fei Yue shoes.
FeiYue is what you would have worn to play out in the street if you were born in Shanghai in the 70s, and at least amongst kitschy type westerners and the odd cool Chinese they’re making a comeback.
When my workmate saw the photo of these shoes he said that he heard they were big amongst the type of people who wear Che Guevera t-shirts. Not something I would do, but it’s definitely in the right ballpark.
At the shop on 585 Zun Yi Lu they’ve got your Fei Yue, they’ve got your Warriors (another old Chinese brand) and they’ve got some Converse and miscellaneous tat too.
I was almost tempted by what seemed to be an officially endorsed Beatles.
I asked the lady if she had any colour other than fricking horrible, but sadly she did not.
Dingle has already written about this store at great length- with maps and the full 9 yards. More information and more of the shoes on offer can be seen there.
It was he and his lady friend (wearing matching red Warriors I might add) that gave me the directions to the shop.
Fei Yue factory shop, 585 Zun Yi Lu (near Tian Shan Lu)
Fei Yue classics- around 30RMB per pair

I like how the pair is wrapped in a paper bag like a bottle of hooch or a fish from the market. It makes them feel more like a consumable good.
Mine came wrapped in the same brown paper. It adds to the authenticity. Mine was even ripped i the same place so I actually thought this was a photo of MY shoes, but then I realised my floor is much more tasteful.
That’s the floor in my ground floor outside reception area, where the bamboo grows up into the first floor mezzanine.
I’ve got about 10 pairs of different warriors now, we found this warrior shop and I got a bit carried away!
Dunno what’s wrong with your camera Suisse but it’s making me look quite filled out, have you photoshopped it?
By the way, a little bird told me that Top One or Warriors (can’t remember which) make shoes for Converse, they were probably real.
Thinking about it, I think it must be Warriors, I’ve got a pair which are very similar to Cons (in style and quality) but with “Warriors” on it instead of “Converse”
To be fair Dingle- you’re wearing a coat, jumper, and are standing next to a lady who weighs 4Kg sopping wet.
right, let me know next time and I’ll stand next to someone of average proportions so I look slim
i think it’s brilliant dingle and H are wearing the same shoes . . .
Team Dingle innit
Angie, you are starting to sound more and more Briiitish by reading these blogs. ;-)
You guys should know by now that all GREAT things are invented and MADE in CHINA!!!
Is it me or is Dingle kinda short?
there were a lot of freakishly tall people there that day
Dingle is around 8 feet tall in his stocking feet.
James, can you be a little more specific with the area of this shop so I may purchase some of these shoes?
regards
Ziccawei
Dingle is around 8 feet tall in his stocking feet.
But surprisingly he shrinks when he puts shoes on.
Zicca, follow the link that Swiss posted just above the pic of Team Dingle, you’ll find info on how to get there (as well as a surprisingly similar yet more informative post).
T, it’s an optical illusion, despite appearances I’m actually standing far away
Incidentally, I have a friend with contacts at Top One, they make claims that the whole situation with French Feiyue is dodgy to say the least, I’ll probably get round to blogging about it at some point.
Thank you Dingle.
Hi, James
Can I quote your post in my blog ?
I have a blog about feiyue, and will bold out your blog address as source :)
Steward
Sure Steward- I’m going to link you up too as I like your blog
Fei Yue are the coolest shoes in the world – I went to that shop and stocked up on three pairs to bring back home.
I’m wearing one black pair to death, and have kept my spare black pair and white pair still wrapped in that gorgeous paper.
Plus, for girls, they manage to make your feet look tiny! Their curved soles are also brilliant for kung fu, of which I am NOT yet a master, or tai chi.
I’m a black belt at Tai Chi, the other week down at the park I knocked three old women to the ground when I was doing it.

Just realised why you’re into these shoes.
