Timelapse- drinking in the Beaver
Clever software people (like me, but presumably without a job or girlfriend) have hacked the software on lots of different Canon compact cameras. They’ve come up with new code to run which lets you play games, shoot RAW photos (don’t ask, it’s geeky) and…..shoot timelapse photography!
So where I used to use a setup like this:

I can now use one like this:
To make videos like this (sorry about the darts being in the way):
Did you spot
- Our resident American waving an American flag?
- A canoodling couple?
- WoAiZhongGuo in a suit?
If you’ve got a Canon camera (like my Ixus 50 / SD400), the hacked software is called CHDK.
Basic info about it is here. Lots of technical help here and the timelapse script I’m using is this one.

Good lord, Woai in the Beaver!!!
I heart timelapses.
Dingle – It was an imposter!
James – Very good for a first attempt but a tad too fast for my tastes, any way to slow it down a little?
I actually sped it up x4 from the original movie, I thought it was pretty boring otherwise!
If you like, I’ll send you the directors cut with full unexpurgated hardcore Beaver action.
Yes please send me the directors cut on DVD, region 2, PAL format.
Did you not notice John getting jiggy with YH at the beginning? I wanna savour every moment!
Ah, damn! Too bad I have an unsupported IXUS (430)!
Do you mean “John”?
Dingle – Yes, sorry for the poor punctuation, I did indeed mean “John” and “YH”.
So I read drinking in the beaver, and thought this post would be about something else entirely.
I’ve been wanting to try one of these timelapse thingys . . . I’m just sayin.
I started reading your blog because it was interesting…now I read it and I want to spend money…
wow didn’t know you can modify the firmware like that. I’m hopping to give it a try now reading from your post..i got the sd700. hope that would work too. Thanks James.
i like the brief but large head shot of Woai in near the end of the film. that’s a really cool timelapse! (i love fooseball/table soccer. my next party i’m gonna set up a time lapse in the gaming room and let the revelers do their thing.)
The gaming room? good lord, listen to Baroness Angie of Texas here, do you live in some kind of stately home?
Oooooooooooooooh I have a Singapore flag today, how exciting!!!!
dingle: i live in texas. my home is rather large . . . especially compared to the “smaller” living conditions of china. besides, i had a good divorce attorney.
are you in singapore today? (stop by and say hello to my ex . . . )
No, I’m in Shanghai, we go out through a proxy server, maybe the Shanghai one is down and it’s rerouting to Singapore.
I have friends in Singapore, do you need me to arrange for someone to go round and “say hello” to your ex?
and to all of the Googlers who were looking for something similar to you Neal- I say hello!
I thought you were going to say
“And now I’m stopping because it’s boring”
Good luck mate, let us know how you get on!
Baroness Angie of Texasshire- yeah we should have really done more stuff to make the timelapse interesting instead of just letting it run like that.
It was just a test really, I’ve told Emma she’s got a long and boring weekend ahead of her waiting for me to do timelapse of pointless nonsense.
Dingle- he’s the one who lives in a cardboard box at the railway station.
dingle: nah, i guess i’ll just email him. (i kind of miss living in singapore . . . i miss having a pint or three clarke quay.)
swiss james: it was still interesting. =) i just happened to notice there was a fooseball table off to the side of the video.
Ah, it’s not THAT ex then!
What happened to nested comments Swiss?
it’s over-over dingle. it’s been over 10 years, a collective 3 children, 2 marriages and at least 1 divorce since the breakup.
We’ve still got nested comments- it’s just that from now on, the number of nesting levels available is zero.
right, so it’s not available then
Awesome video! Can’t wait to see more when it isn’t merely a test. Like the song too, who is it?
Sarah – Groove Armada- Superstylin’
Dingle- it’s an effective compromise
From the expat forum to hours of vicarious blog watching, I have to say swiss james you have done quite a good job at relieving me from precious study time.. However I am all the more better off with the useful short witty comments and big pictures ( other bloggers take a feather ).
Any how I hope to meet you and your following at some place on some kind of thursday..till then keep up the love..
James is always giving people relief!
RIP Reply-to-Commentor feature! You will be greatly missed!
Cool! I saw all of those things as youtube froze to build up the buffer.
Great timelapse, but would be even better if you’d risked having a game of darts at some point in the movie!
