Thanks shoppers- she was one of the gardners at the minority village I went to so yeah, just old dirty clothes. It’s good to know that some Chinese people are still wearing the cool old hats though

shop girl: don’t you think that would contribute to the perpetual stereotyping of the chinese? i mean as an asian woman living in a predominant non-asian country, don’t you want to avoid such stereotypes? just a thought . . .

not really, i think it’s beautiful. Would love to go to the countryside and just take lots of photos of the environment and its people.

I love the way the old men in China dress, you know those white loose tops and some kind of special chinos. If I was a fashion designer they would be my BIG inspiration.

Sometimes I think it’s sad that China seems to want to change everything and make the old traditional things go away, it’s a pity, because some of Chinas strongest attributes is just those natural things, the old men in their pyjama, the middleaged women with perms going to the market to buy fresh fishes in their old slippers. I think it’s extremely charming.

Shoppers- you were just here, why didn’t you take a trip into the countryside with your camera?

One thing I think is funny in Shanghai is how it’s almost only old people who practise Tai Chi.

At first I thought that it was an activity that doctors recommend for old people, but I saw a documentary filmed in the 1970s and the people in their 20s and 30s were doing the Tai Chi.

Then I saw a docu from the 1980s and it was people in the 30s and 40s. Now it’s the same people exercising, it’s just that they’re in their 50s and 60s.

One fifty eight: the day ends over the mountain,
Two hundred and sixty men move the moon like a rock,
    Thirty-seven salivate over earth.
Forty eight middle managers light fire to the fields.
