Booze news
Ladies and Gentlemen I give you the greatest idea since Cheeseburger in a can
(Blanc de blanc) Champagne in a can!
Now I know what you’re thinking, Champagne is a wine fermented in dark French cellars by craftsmen wearing white gloves and top hats. Maybe so, but it’s also true that the majority of Champagne is drank by braying idiots who are too busy air-kissing good-looking people that they secretly hate to have any clue what they’re tasting.
Bar Rouge, Muse, Lounge 18 etc. will be serving this up by next week, charging through the nose for it and none of the cretins in there will even notice. Vive la revolution!
I’m not sure whether this is a good idea though:
an all-you-can-drink special in an airport? Dubious.

James - As a frequent Champagne drinker I can see these insulting comments are aimed squarely at me, but I’m not the type to retaliate, so air kisses back to you mate. As for the all you can drink, you see that’s the difference between China and England. In England where everyone is a piss head, it would be a mistake, but here it’s not going to be a problem. People will just drink what they “need” and not a drop more.
Here is a trip report for Cheeseburger in a Can. Doesn’t sound that bad.

WoAi- don’t be so paranoid! You’re always on the G&T’s as far as I can tell- my ire is aimed at the kind of people who go to those Riviera Pool Parties and appear on Cedric M videos.
Grrrr.
James - Phew, that’s a relief and yes, sorry for jumping the gun, I am a bit paranoid. [Quickly hides invitation to Riviera Pool Party]
Jimmy, surely that’s Chardonnay/proper hangin?
I saw champagne in a can in Houston, Texas 4 years ago.
Thank you! I’m here all week. Try the veal, and remember to tip your waitress.
i don’t know if ya’ll have soft drinks that come in a bag like we do here in the States (Capri Sun and Minute Maid for example) but at my son’s bday party 2 weeks ago, a dad came up with the brilliant idea of beer in a bag! (we’re going to have to find someone to make these.) but what a great idea! beer, mojitos or margaritas in a bag - just take the straw and plunk it through the hole and drink! =D
Angie - beverages in a bag are very common in Thailand.*
*Real fact of the week on ispyshanghai
I think James might have seen this before, but they sell alcohol i.e. soju in a what looks like a juice box in Korea. Come to think of it I have seen some similar stuff in Japan as well…wow, marketing to kids @ an early age. The box looked like juice for kids.
When I lived in Qingdao I often saw bags of beer. People filled up what looked like heavy-duty shopping bags from kegs on the street for a couple kuai.
i would TOTALLY but beer, mojitos, margaritas or other mixed drink in a bag. i can imagine it now: toobing down the Comal River with a ice chest full of bags o’ margaritas! never have to worry about breaking a bottle at a picnic again! punching the little straw into a bag of cranberry and vodka on the beach! the possibilities are endless . . .
i’ve seen the bagged water and flavored waters from japan and korea, but never anything alcoholic.
I’ve always treated airports as all-you-drink venues. In fact, I just conducted a word association survey with a small focus group–myself–and when prompted with the word ‘airport’, 100% of participants responded with the word ‘booze’. The most common second response was ‘plane’.
WOW, we have the same coffeshop in swedish trainstation in stockholm (cafe ritazza, exact same logo as well)
the can you showed on the pic I drank in lawson last saturday, it WAS certainly a good one, there’s anothe rone that tastes lychee. AMAZING, much better than disgusting bacardi breezer or rio, cheaper as well, much cheaper
yeah it certainly looks like a good one, and at 4.0% alcohol it’s got quite a kick in its tail too!
I thought paris hilton invented champagne in a can
Neil- what is Champagne other than fizzy Chardonnay / Pinot Noir anyway?
I’ve got a few soju in a box drinks in my fridge still, SaeJin brought them over from Korea for me. Great for if you go hiking (apparently).
When I went to Qingdao I missed out on all of the beers in a bag and bars around the brewery action. Gutted when I found out about it afterwards, maybe I need a repeat visit.
Shopgirl- I can just picture you, stumbling out of bed wearing yesterday’s clothes- cracking open a can of wine on your way to work….
In response to Angie in Texas: Go to Tsingtao or Yanjing…Kegs on the side of the street, looks like shit, but pay 5 Kuai and they fill a plastic bag full of cold ass beer. punch a hole in that dog, and you’re set for a day of walking—just be careful that you don’t set it down on a shopkeeper’s splintery wooden counter. you may get a mopping job you did not expect.
and i just read G.B’s comment—cheers mate
and James’ comment. wow i should read the whole blog page before posting! double Cheers!
All-you-can-drink at airports. Why’s that a problem? Heck, I’d even let the pilot in for a few, quick halves if they so wanted. It might keep them off the drugs that way!
No space cakes in Pudong?
Any Pinot Noir in a can or what?!
Ian
After seeing this…i think it’s time to move back to Shanghai! God damn it!
Miss Jane, for leaving more than 5 comments in a day, you win a free t-shirt!
Please go to any Gap store and pick one off the racks. If the security guards give you any hassle, just tell them I sent you.
Can I go to Banana Republic instead? I get along with the security guards better there!
