The Nerve Centre
Here in a rare “behind the curtain” glance is a look at the top-secret operations control room from which I oversee ISpyShanghai.com:
This is my personal computer monitor on which I Gimp up images of fake bank notes, or airbrush out any minor imperfections from my otherwise immaculate face. (And yes, fellow geeks, that whole thing is being driven by one PC)
Here are a few of the ISpy Team drafting out the latest update for my approval. Ryan (top left) is the one who makes the occasionally grammatical errors.
As you can see, they need to use several different monitors all at once. Some of them display projected visitor numbers if I post yet another photo of a Chinese sign where the English is slightly incorrect, whilst one is permanently showing “The Song Of Optimus Prime” by A. Appleyard to remind us of the standards we are trying to reach.
This is the boardroom where all executive level decisions are taken- changing a theme perhaps, or not posting on a Thursday because I’m hungover and need need to spend lunchtime wiping my brow with a damp sponge.
And here I am with two of the major shareholders, surveying our land and loyal subjects (/the apron of the airport) .

Why aren’t you wearing the blue shoe covers?
because I’m wearing my awesome new adidas beaujolais Jeans and I don’t want to cover them up.
You elitist, not wearing the blue booties so that you don’t get the floor all dirty from your shoes….?!!? Wait come again why are they wearing the booties since it looks like a floor ppl are supposed to walk on.
Awesome on the Optimus Prime thing…would never have though or have found that out, even more so since I declared to my wife that I reached the end of the internet. (Told her I did everything I could on the net and was now officially bored with it)
dingle showed me that site with the Optimus Prime thing- it’s a fascinating insight into one of the 21st century’s greatest thinkers.
Just as I suspected Creegan, the nerve centre of Ispyshanghai is the computer from Wargames, you should have shown it mid tic-tac-toe. I’m particularly impressed with the way each screen on the display has been calibrated to show a slightly different hue, must have taken ages.
Ah yes, the Song of Optimus Prime, a triumph in sci-fi poetry! I actually used to know this guy and he was every bit as eccentric as you can imagine. Did you try Sea Patrol 1 yet James, “a game: a Sea Patrol suction-dredger-sub cleaning up an incursion of unauthorized scuba divers”.
Impressive view from the urinals (last pic?) by the way
Is that Beaujolais Nouveau or just the regular Beaujolais? That really is a state of the art urinal but I think you all need to step a bit closer - you’re not as big as you like to think (or so I’ve heard!).
Very nice … so when’s the airport opening then?
Sorry … terminal.
I’ve been giving the thumbs up to my computer screen for the past five minutes, but it won’t seem to transfer to the screen…
I was disturbed that my preferred comment regarding the blue booties had already been taken, so I’ll have to go with option 2:
‘the occasionally grammatical errors’
…
Damn, this ‘thumbs up’ thing still isn’t working.
Good work, and keep spending your days so productively.
白人(FYI I’m just going to do that every time now)- the terminal should open some time in February / March- and if it doesn’t, you can bet it will not by my fault. Worked till 22:15 last night and Saturday will be my 7th straight day at it. An ordinary mortal would be tired, but I take ginseng so I’m OK
Rory- I got the thumbs up but it was caught by the spam filter. Why do you have “Generic Vicodin” written on there anyway?
Funnily enough, Ryan always makes that mistake because he spent 6 months in England and the Madonna song “Hung Up” was always on the radio- that song goes:
“Time goes by….so slowly/ Time goes by….so slowly”
So now he tends to say things like
“James, today the system is quite slowly”
WoAi- well they only came out in the last week or so, making them the nouveau I suppose! Next month there are some amazing red ones coming out- I’ve had my eye on those bad boys since September.
dingle- more impressive than the photo you took when we went to that teppanyaki place eh? That wasn’t the prettiest thing I’d ever seen.
Creegan, I can’t remember that, what did I take? obviously the picture had a considerable impression on you if you still remember it
I believe the term is “midstream”
This post was enjoyable!
Hehe much enjoyed
swiss james, i had no idea you check hypebeast, and i presume you got those adidas from ACU?
hey Lei- I sometimes look at hypebeast, sometimes high snobriety, and I first saw the Flavours Of The World range at ACU where they had samples of the whole range up.
I picked up this pair at I.T in Plaza 66 though- when I went to ACU at the start of the month, they weren’t out yet.
