May I have a day off now please?
Beause May 1st-7th is a public holiday, many people in China (including me) have been working on Saturday, Sunday and now today. The eighth straight day of clocking in. And it’s raining. I don’t think I’m exagerrating when I say this is the greatest injustice known to man. Not drinking on Friday and Saturday nights was a real struggle for me, struggles which I abandoned at about 8pm. I feel absolutely wiped out and can’t wait for the holiday to start.
On the upside, yesterday we got a free can of holiday coconut juice!
Now I know what you’re thinking:
“That’s probably just a load of smashed up coconut magma, with a bit of essence thrown in for zip”
however you would be wrong:
And that, mes amis, is why “Orthodox Coconut Juice” is the best damn Coconut Juice on the market!*
*not suitable for people with allergy to cat hair, some monsterism may ocurr.
Last night I went for mexican food in Zapatas with some friends who are staying at my apartment. This is a place where I normally end up dancing on the bar after having tequilla poured down my throat (please see here and here for details).
Yesterday was much more sedate- even though they were holding a pretty wild salsa dancing class downstairs, I just had my food, nearly fell asleep face-down in the refried beans, then went home.
Tomorrow though the holiday, and the binge-drinking, begins in earnest.

Yeah the fucked up Chinese holiday system. I am sick of it. They only came up with this genius idea a few years ago to boost tourism. Great idea - get the entire country to go on holiday at the same time. I usually rebel by either not turning up at the office on the Saturday and Sunday, or go in and surf the net, reading blogs like yours till it’s time to go home.
Oh, and I took today off so I only “worked” 7 straight days.
So what will you do for your holiday? If you’ve got a week that’ll just give you enough time to take the train to Urumqi and back with a day to look around.
Is that your thumb? It’s bizarrely fat. And your nails need cutting.
WoAi- stick it to the man! I had to do proper work because they were going to pull the power in our test lab over the holiday- so we had to shift servers over to another building. Why am I telling you this? It’s very dull- I’ll stop now.
Daeguowl- hmmmurumqi, that’s tempting, I’m thinking about going to either Tokyo or Seoul for the weekend, but can’t make my mind up really. Haven’t looked into flights either.
Owen- I’m very sensitive about my fat thumb, can’t believe you brought it up. I’ll be crying myself to sleep now, wearing a cling film wrap around my hand
James, it’s interesting you thought, however briefly, that I or anyone else would be interested in which building your servers were located in.
Turpan, best meat sticks in China….and fat thumb is the clasic sign of thumb sucker.
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THAT DRINK
